Activity: Production Deployment
Objective
This Production Deployment activity encompasses distribution and installation of the solution into the production environment, as well as transferring production processing from the existing system to the new server system, and cutting over system operations and support from the project team to the client operations personnel.
Major Deliverables
Tasks
Define Distribution and Installation Method
Objective:
The solution must be delivered to all client sites and installed. This task includes choosing the installation mechanism, planning the physical delivery of the systems, and determining who will install it and how.
A typical set of rollout processes and standards includes:
- End user support
- Contingency operations
- Outage plans
- Deployment checklist
The delivery environment consists of the specific tools, technologies and processes needed, which includes:
- Operations tools and facilities
- End user tools
- Database
- Control processes
- Operations support
Input:
- Deployment Plan
- Technology and Tool Selection
- Hardware and Software Procured
- Technical Architecture
Output:
- Installation Plan as part of Deployment Guide
Establish Baseline Production Environment
Objective:
This target production environment must be prepared and configured as defined by the technical architecture. The sub-tasks listed below should be considered a starting checklist for the task. The time spent on this task will vary greatly if a production environment already exists.
Input:
- Deployment Plan
- Production Environment Installed
- Technical Architecture
Output:
- Working Baseline Production environment
Deploy Solution to Production
Objective:
The solution must be delivered to the production environment to create a operational system. Tasks may be segmented into multiple sub-tasks, driven by component depencies. Finally, the production procedures should be established to maintain the now working environment.
Input:
- Baseline Production Environment Ready
- Testing complete
Output:
- Deployed Production System
Core Supporting Assets
Yellow Flags
- Resources with key skills are no longer available to help with deployment
- Deployment issues on past increments
- Complex deployment requirements that have scenarios that have not been explicitly tested during Testing Activities
